We are reviewing math text books. What do you use at your school? What are your thoughts and opinions?

We used Trailblazers at my old school in MA. It was all right except that we had a lot of ESL students and it was very wordy, which made it hard for them.

Now here in GA I use Harcourt Math. In some ways I like it better than Trailblazers because it has a lot of practice exercises and less garbledygook. I know that the garbledygook (word problems, experiments, stories) is important for building problem-solving skills, but I have a lot of ESL students here too, and they struggle SO much with that. When I assign strictly numerical exercises (e.g. 45x6=?), that is when I see my ESL students really get confident and do well.

So, I dunno...there are ups and downs with any curriculum. It looks like we're getting Everyday Math for next year, so we'll see how that goes.

Agreed. Trailblazers has a lot of focus on reading based involvement-- I only have one student who is ESL, so it is not a huge struggle for my class, but the one student who is ESL struggles MAJOR with trailblazers, and yes, does very well when it is just numbers. The problem is our End of Grade test is almost ALL story problems so it will be a challenge for the ESL students.
